This picture was taken during the summer of 1997. Little did I know at the time that this trip to Europe would be the last time I saw my mom. She died of a stroke just a few weeks later.

Since then, my dad has had two heart attacks. And just last year, my genes caught up with me. Despite living a healthy lifestyle, I had high cholesterol. So listen up heart disease as I try to shut you down!

February is American Heart Month and I’m spreading the word about how to prevent heart disease – the #1 killer of American women. To start, I’m sharing some fun things you can do this month while you get heart healthy.

National Wear Red Day:
Wear red this Friday, February 7 to raise awareness about heart disease. Plus join #MyHeartChat Friday afternoon at 2:00 PM EST. It’s a Twitter chat with the American Heart Association, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the acting Surgeon General to inspire women to take action for a heart healthy life.

The Heart Truth’s 28 Days to a Healthy Heart Challenge:
This is a fun way to take action to lower your risk for heart disease. Throughout the month, accept the challenge of the day and share how you’re making changes for a healthy heart.

Download “The Healthy Heart Handbook for Women” courtesy of The Heart Truth – it is filled with new information on women’s heart disease and tips on how to reduce your risk of heart-related problems. It’s thorough and an easy read.

So get to it! Join me in fighting heart disease. Oh, and speaking of fighting – I’m happy to report that my cholesterol is back down to a healthy level. ♥♥♥
